Fishin' for Stars

A seahorse is neither the sea or a horse?!?! A starfish is neither a star or a fish?!? Wait a sec, an orange is orange and nothing else can rhyme with it?!? It must be so confusing to be one and trying to figure out all these words and their meanings.

Eli knows what a horse is and he knows what a fish is- there is not much confusion there. But today when we were reading his under the sea book we learned about a seahorse. As soon as I said the word seahorse Eli went klop klop klop- because that is the sound a horse makes. I sat puzzled as well. How do you explain the difference between a seahorse and a, well, a land-horse to a 18 month old.

I say horse and he says klop klop- it is simple enough to him. Why does our language have to be so crazy. Luckily oranges are orange- but still someday he'll have to learn to differentiate the two; the color and the fruit.

Luckily a starfish does look like a star, so I can teach him star- but it has very little resemblance to a fish! When I called it a fish Eli thought I was being silly-'no momma it's a star,' his look seemed to portray.

I know when he goes to college he will know that there are stars, there are fish and there are starfish! But still I find it quite a challenge to try to explain the difference between all of these things to a toddler right now!!!
